IBM Launches AI Fellowship as Classrooms Outpace School Readiness

The Morning Consult survey, commissioned by IBM, reveals a systemic mismatch in American schools. Although AI is becoming a fixture in secondary education—with 45% of high school teachers reporting daily use—the infrastructure for responsible implementation remains underdeveloped. Educators cite a lack of professional development and limited instructional materials as the primary barriers to effective AI integration.

Parents are increasingly vocal about this disconnect. While 77% of parents want a seat at the table regarding classroom AI policy, only one in five claims to understand current guidance. To address these concerns, IBM is launching a fellowship for up to 100 superintendents and educators in the New York area this fall. The program will leverage the company's SkillsBuild platform to provide leaders with the practical tools and frameworks necessary to guide ethical AI use, with plans to scale the initiative to additional states within the year.

Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM's Chief Impact Officer, emphasized that current leadership decisions will dictate how an entire generation navigates the future workforce. The fellowship intends to move beyond abstract theory, offering capstone projects and peer-learning cohorts to help administrators manage specific challenges, such as student dependency on AI and the rising demand for transparency in digital curricula.
