The gems trace their origins to a massive 830-carat crystal discovered in 2003 by gem hunter Don Kogen in the Mavuco district of Mozambique. Since their extraction, they have undergone rigorous scrutiny by international laboratories. The Swiss Gübelin Gem Lab awarded the pair an ‘Outstanding’ rating with a score of 92.1, while the French Bellerophon Gemlab granted them the rare Bellerophon Privilege Award. Martial Curti, CEO of Bellerophon, noted that the pair’s combination of size and quality represents an extraordinary rarity in the world of colored stones.
Sotheby’s to Auction Record-Breaking Paraiba Tourmalines
Two Paraiba tourmalines, weighing 71.239 and 72.844 carats, are set to redefine market records when they hit the auction block at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on September 17, 2026. These stones, fashioned by artist Kat Florence, stand as the largest flawless matched pair of their kind ever offered for public sale.
This high-profile auction also features another milestone from the Kat Florence atelier: a 424.80-carat flawless tanzanite necklace. Surpassing her previous record set by the ‘Namunyak’ necklace, this piece is surrounded by D-flawless diamonds and earned a 91.9 rating from Gübelin. These items are currently concluding a multi-city tour through Singapore, Tokyo, and Taichung, culminating in the Hong Kong event. Beyond the auction stage, Florence continues to integrate her craft into the hospitality sector, displaying similar museum-quality pieces within her historic 1848 limestone hotel property in Canada.
