U.S. Court Invalidates Kaneka Patent, Clearing Market for CrysQnol

A federal judge in New York has invalidated two patent claims held by Kaneka Corporation, ruling that the company failed to meet legal standards for utility and enablement. The decision effectively ends a three-year legal battle and permits Cocrystal Technology to sell its CrysQnol ubiquinol ingredient in the United States.

U.S. Court Invalidates Kaneka Patent, Clearing Market for CrysQnol

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York issued a summary judgment on September 2, 2026, finding that Kaneka’s '080 patent was based on an untested hypothesis rather than a verifiable invention. The court noted that Kaneka’s own experts could not explain the stabilizing effect of coenzyme Q11, a component central to the disputed claims. This ruling concludes Case No. 1:23-cv-07483, which began when Kaneka sued the Jiaxing-based firm in October 2023 over its flagship ubiquinol product.

Following the court's decision, Cocrystal Technology has rebranded its ingredient from Crystal QH to CrysQnol. Dr. Xuefeng Mei, founder of the company, described the outcome as an opportunity to expand its market presence. The ruling removes a significant barrier for nutraceutical distributors and formulators, allowing them to utilize the company’s cocrystal stabilization technology without the threat of further litigation. The company continues to integrate this proprietary technology across its portfolio, including its CurCutine and Precitein lines, as it looks to strengthen its intellectual property standing in the global market.
