Avathon and IIT Roorkee Launch Physical AI Research Lab

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and industrial autonomy firm Avathon are establishing the Avathon Physical AI Lab. Housed within the university's Department of Computer Science & Engineering, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic research and the practical application of autonomous systems in sectors like manufacturing and logistics.

The partnership leverages IIT Roorkee’s research expertise in machine learning and multi-agent systems to tackle complex industrial challenges. For Avathon CEO Pervinder Johar, an alumnus of the institute, the project represents a return to his academic roots with a focus on scaling autonomy across global supply chains and critical infrastructure. The lab will function alongside Avathon’s new AI Center of Excellence in Bangalore, creating a direct pipeline for converting theoretical breakthroughs into production-ready industrial solutions.

Beyond technical development, the lab will host doctoral fellowships, internships, and workshops to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, noted that the initiative supports the goal of technological self-reliance, positioning the institution to address large-scale operational problems. By focusing on the factory floor and supply chain rather than enterprise IT, the collaboration seeks to define the next frontier of artificial intelligence in the physical world.
