Girls' Flag Football Hits National Stage at Inaugural MaxPreps Showdown

The tournament field was curated using MaxPreps’ proprietary ranking data, pulling together powerhouse programs such as Alabama’s Central (Phenix City) alongside California’s JSerra Catholic, Huntington Beach, and Newport Harbor. The roster of talent includes standout individual athletes like top-ranked Makena Cook and Ava Irwin of Sierra Canyon, alongside JSerra Catholic’s Tessa Russell and Central’s Savannah Sevier.

This event arrives as participation in the sport experiences a sharp upward trajectory. Recent NFHS data shows that the number of high school athletes competing in girls' flag football surged to 68,847 during the 2024-25 academic year, marking a 60% increase. With schools offering the sport expanding to 2,736, organizers view the Showdown as a necessary bridge between local competition and a broader national identity. B.J. Pilling, President of PlayOn Sports, noted that the event provides a dedicated stage for athletes to display the high level of talent currently driving the sport's expansion. Fans can access the games through free simulcasts on MaxPreps and the NFHS Network, while the platform plans to bolster the event with athlete profiles and behind-the-scenes coverage. The initiative is set to expand further in 2027 with a planned East Coast Showdown in Tampa, Florida.
