FDA Backs Bright Path to Reshore Essential Drug Manufacturing
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Bright Path an Advanced Manufacturing Technology designation, signaling a shift in domestic pharmaceutical production. The Arizona-based firm uses proprietary continuous-flow technology to produce carboplatin and lidocaine—two drugs currently plagued by chronic shortages—entirely within American borders.

CEO Tony Quinones argues that this breakthrough dismantles the long-held belief that U.S. labor and infrastructure costs render domestic production non-competitive against manufacturers in China and India. With 58% of starting materials for U.S.-approved drugs currently sourced from overseas, the government has prioritized such initiatives to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. Bright Path, which developed its platform through the DARPA EQUIP-A-Pharma program, has already contracted its initial production capacity to healthcare providers across 48 states, with first shipments scheduled for early 2027.
