Farmers Insurance Warns of Historic El Niño Risks

With a 69% probability of an El Niño event surpassing all records since 1950, Farmers Insurance is urging homeowners and businesses to audit their coverage immediately. Forecasters at NOAA indicate that the developing weather pattern has a greater than 90% chance of reaching peak intensity during the 2026-27 winter season.

Farmers Insurance Warns of Historic El Niño Risks

The climate pattern, characterized by significantly warmer tropical Pacific waters, is expected to shift the jet stream and heighten the risk of severe storms, flooding, and landslides across the United States. Bobby Massey, head of catastrophe claims at Farmers, emphasizes that property owners should review their insurance policies and document their assets before severe weather enters the local forecast.

Flood protection remains a critical area of concern, as standard homeowners and business policies often exclude water damage. Because flood insurance typically carries a mandatory waiting period before activation, experts warn that waiting until a storm is imminent may leave property owners without coverage. Beyond immediate winter threats, the increased moisture associated with El Niño can fuel excessive vegetation growth, potentially elevating wildfire risks during the following spring and summer months. The insurer recommends a proactive approach, including clearing gutters to prevent foundation damage, verifying reconstruction cost limits, and confirming that automobile policies include comprehensive coverage for weather-related incidents.
