Markel International Restructures Marine Leadership with Dual Appointments

Based in London, the pair will report to Director of Marine Transportation Grant Smith, tasked with consolidating the firm's underwriting expertise across its newly integrated Marine Transportation business unit.

These appointments follow the consolidation of Markel’s Hull & Hull War, MECO, and Marine & Energy Liabilities divisions. By streamlining leadership, the insurer aims to offer brokers more coordinated access to specialized underwriting in an era defined by volatile geopolitical tensions, shifting weather patterns, and complex supply chain disruptions.

Dean Johnson, who joined Markel in 2025 following a 14-year tenure at Travelers, will focus on the sustainable expansion of the Transport & Logistics portfolio. His mandate includes refining risk assessment models and enhancing broker engagement. Rhys O’Neill, a veteran with over 15 years of experience across Lloyd’s Syndicates and P&I Clubs, will lead the Marine Liability strategy. He is expected to manage increasingly integrated risks while maintaining bespoke service levels for clients facing emerging exposures. Both leaders were selected for their track records in negotiating large-scale broker deals and their ability to navigate the technical demands of the current marine and energy insurance landscape.
