Beyond the Follower: How Creators Are Pivoting to Business Ownership

With 62% of creators relying on income outside of content production, the industry is shifting from viral reach to sustainable business models. RM11’s 2027 forecast highlights a move toward owned audiences and professionalized operations, as creators prioritize long-term profitability and mental health over volatile algorithm-driven growth.

Beyond the Follower: How Creators Are Pivoting to Business Ownership

The creator economy is undergoing a structural transformation as the pursuit of massive follower counts loses its luster. Data from the 2026 State of Creators study by CreatorIQ reveals that over two-thirds of creators earn less than $10,000 annually from their content, signaling that current models are failing to provide financial stability. Olivier David, Chief Growth Officer at RM11, argues that the next phase requires creators to operate like independent media studios rather than mere influencers.

This transition relies on five primary pillars. First, creators are migrating toward owned audiences—using newsletters and private communities to bypass platform algorithms, a trend already embraced by 72% of creators according to Epidemic Sound. Second, platforms are evolving into comprehensive business operating systems that integrate pay-per-view, messaging, and CRM tools. Third, creators are adopting traditional business metrics, such as customer acquisition cost, to move away from the unreliable "post and hope" growth strategy.

Finally, the focus is shifting toward operational efficiency and human sustainability. While 93% of creators utilize AI to accelerate production, the emphasis is moving toward using technology to reduce burnout rather than simply churning out more content. Platforms are now expected to provide infrastructure for wellness, partnering with organizations like Pineapple Support to address the mental health challenges inherent in an always-on career. For RM11, this means providing the tools—from account management to audience-growth initiatives—necessary to turn digital profiles into long-term enterprises.
