HDT Bio Lands $39.5M ARPA-H Grant for Automated RNA Manufacturing

Seattle-based HDT Bio has secured up to $39.5 million from the ARPA-H GIVE program to develop a closed, end-to-end system for on-site RNA medicine production. The initiative aims to shift manufacturing away from centralized facilities, enabling the rapid creation of personalized cancer immunotherapies directly at the point of care.

The project, led by the Distributed RNA Synthesis (DRS) consortium, addresses the logistical hurdles of current RNA production, which often struggles with the high costs and time delays inherent in bespoke patient treatments. By automating the entire process—from DNA template synthesis to final fill-finish and quality control—the team intends to make personalized genetic medicines more accessible. HDT Bio will leverage its proprietary LION delivery system to formulate these therapies.

In the program's second phase, the technology will be deployed at the Houston Methodist Research Institute to manufacture three distinct demonstration products: a personalized self-amplifying RNA neoantigen immunotherapy, a CD19/BCMA CAR-T mRNA treatment, and a circular RNA gene therapy. This collaboration marks a significant pivot for HDT Bio into the personalized cancer space, following recent industry-wide milestones in neoantigen therapy. Beyond HDT Bio, the consortium includes Elegen, RiboPro, Triple Ring Technologies, and The University of Queensland's BASE facility, combining expertise in synthetic DNA, automated manufacturing, and clinical translation.
