The Independent Media Initiative organized this effort to showcase homegrown expertise, featuring creators such as Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day, Grant Sanderson of 3Blue1Brown, and Adam Savage of Tested. These figures join a broader roster of influencers, including Emily Graslie and Tim Dodd, to produce content that highlights how science functions within individual communities. The rollout begins in the Southwest and progresses through the Midwest, Plains, and Mountain regions, concluding on the West Coast.
Science Across America Unites YouTube Creators in Nationwide Initiative
With a combined reach exceeding 90 million subscribers, 50x50: Science Across America launched today, marking the first coordinated state-by-state media effort of its kind. The project pairs prominent YouTube creators with local scientists to document regional contributions to research through a ten-week, rolling video release schedule ending this November.

Stuart Sevier, president and co-founder of the Independent Media Initiative, positioned the project as a comprehensive panorama of the American scientific landscape. By moving beyond traditional broadcast models, the initiative leverages the influence of creator-led platforms to reach younger audiences. The production is supported by a coalition of organizations, including HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, reflecting a shift in how scientific narratives are distributed and consumed across digital media.
