UK Overtakes Germany in 2026 Fortune 500 Europe Ranking

The United Kingdom has claimed the top spot for corporate representation in the 2026 Fortune 500 Europe, unseating Germany for the first time in the list's four-year history. With 76 companies compared to Germany's 73, the shift underscores a changing landscape among the continent's largest revenue generators.

Volkswagen holds its position as the continent's largest company, reporting $363 billion in revenue despite a broader economic climate defined by tight margins. While total revenues across the 500 firms climbed 4% to $15.5 trillion—a figure representing half of Europe's GDP—profitability remains under pressure. The collective profit margin dropped to 6.5%, even as total profits rebounded to $1 trillion following last year's decline. To maintain efficiency, these corporate giants trimmed their combined workforce by 1%, effectively boosting revenue per employee by 5%.

Financial services remain the backbone of the European economy, accounting for nearly a quarter of total revenue and 40% of all profits. Energy and automotive sectors round out the top tiers, with Shell, Glencore, BP, and TotalEnergies occupying four of the top five positions. Meanwhile, the executive suite is slowly diversifying; 43 companies are now led by women, marking a record for the ranking. However, this represents only 8.6% of the list, trailing the 11% female representation seen in the U.S. version of the index. FMS Wertmanagement Group sits at the bottom of the list, establishing a new entry threshold of $7.4 billion in annual revenue.
