The short film, which earned top honors including Best in Fest and Best Director for Sims, highlights a breakout performance by Sydney Cole Alexander. The cast also features Bates Wilder, Jerah Milligan, Taylor Rose, and the late Dee Freeman. The narrative serves as a reflection of Sims’ own experiences, drawing from a life shaped by childhood epilepsy, global travel, and a background in visual research for major studio releases at BOND.
The Country They Call Life Secures Catalina Film Festival Slot
Following a dominant four-award sweep at Film Invasion Los Angeles, Grace Sims’ directorial debut, The Country They Call Life, has been named an official selection for the Catalina Film Festival. The project, which explores themes of reconciliation and personal agency, continues its circuit with an upcoming screening at the LA Women in Film Festival.

Bringing the project to completion required significant resilience. Production was disrupted in January 2025 by Los Angeles wildfires, forcing a total regrouping of the team and additional fundraising efforts. Sims managed to finalize the post-production work while preparing for the birth of her son, who arrived just three weeks prior to the film’s world premiere. Currently, the writer-director is working on a feature-length adaptation that expands on the short's core themes of generational cycles and individual belief systems.
