While 97% of C-suite leaders bank on AI to reshape operational performance—targeting customer care, network optimization, and service personalization—the path to implementation is fraught with friction. Over half of firms cite budget constraints, while 43% acknowledge their current workforce lacks the necessary technical skills. A critical lack of strategic clarity further complicates the transition, with one-third of executives admitting they struggle to define a coherent long-term direction.
This workforce transformation is set to be radical. Roughly 69% of leaders expect that three-quarters of their employees will require either extensive upskilling or replacement to function in an AI-integrated environment. Despite this, the sector struggles with its own image; only 31% of executives believe telecom will remain a top-tier destination for talent by 2030. Cédric Foray, EY’s global telecommunications leader, warns that simply layering AI onto existing processes is a failure of vision. Success requires a fundamental reengineering of organizational structures and leadership roles.
