Canada and Germany Commit $300M to LawZero for Safe AI Development
Canada and Germany have pledged up to CAD $300 million to Montréal-based startup LawZero, marking a significant push to establish sovereign, "safe-by-design" artificial intelligence. Announced at the ALL IN conference, the funding aims to counter risks associated with autonomous systems by prioritizing transparent, evidence-based AI models.
LawZero plans to scale its international research team and establish a new office in Berlin to integrate with the European innovation ecosystem. Domestically, the company will partner with Hypertec and 5C to build dedicated, sovereign compute infrastructure in Canada. This infrastructure is intended to anchor critical capabilities within the country while providing the high-performance resources necessary for large-scale research. Officials from both Canada and Germany emphasized that the investment serves to protect national interests and ensure that future AI development aligns with democratic values.
