The CME FutureSports Performance Indexes (FSPI) aim to convert granular, play-by-play baseball statistics into objective financial benchmarks. By tracking cumulative team success, the initiative provides a mechanism for industry participants to hedge capital exposures, mirroring the methodology used for traditional equity or commodity indexes. FutureSports maintains full control over the governance and calculation of these metrics, ensuring that the league remains independent from the index administration process.
FutureSports and MLB Partner to Launch Baseball Performance Indexes
Major League Baseball is entering the financial markets through an exclusive agreement with Chicago-based FutureSports to develop the first-ever broad-based performance indexes for all 30 clubs. These benchmarks will leverage official league data to underpin new cash-settled futures contracts managed by the CME Group, pending final regulatory approval.

This partnership follows a similar model recently established with the National Hockey League. As FutureSports moves to formalize these instruments, the firm emphasizes that all methodology adheres to International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) standards for financial benchmarks. With the infrastructure now in place, the CME Group plans to offer weekly, monthly, and quarterly contracts, marking a shift in how professional sports performance is integrated into global financial risk management.
