The expansion centers on the company’s Nashville, Tennessee facility, where capacity for high-purity phosphoric acid has already seen significant growth. CEO Richard Hooper described the move as a catalyst for shifting the North American energy market from a reliance on imported assembly toward a localized raw material supply chain. This strategic pivot aims to bolster both electric vehicle production and grid-scale energy storage.
Innophos Scales Domestic Battery Phosphate Production
To reduce reliance on foreign battery components, New Jersey-based Innophos is pivoting its century-old manufacturing infrastructure toward the domestic production of battery-grade phosphates. The company plans to supply iron phosphate for lithium iron phosphate cells and sodium iron phosphate for next-generation energy storage systems by 2028.

Supporting this shift is the company’s Voltix brand, introduced in 2024 to target the energy infrastructure sector. Karen Winkowski, VP of Innovation, noted that the firm’s existing manufacturing base provides the necessary foundation to meet the rising demand for phosphate-based cathode materials. Over the last five years, Innophos has directed more than $100 million into its North American assets to ensure the scalability of these chemical technologies.
