The Hidden Cost of Waxing: Why Your Routine Could Cost a Retirement Fund

Investing the money spent on a recurring, decades-long waxing habit could yield a sum equivalent to the entire median retirement savings of an American in their 60s. A new analysis from Great Neck-based studio Laser by Aleya suggests that while laser hair removal requires a higher upfront payment, it offers significant long-term savings.

The Hidden Cost of Waxing: Why Your Routine Could Cost a Retirement Fund

The financial impact of hair removal is often viewed through the lens of a single appointment, but the cumulative expense over 40 years reveals a different reality. By analyzing audited financial filings from the European Wax Center and historical dermatology data, researchers calculated that a standard full-body waxing routine every four weeks totals over $85,000 in spending. When adjusted for a conservative 7% annual investment return, that figure represents more than 15% of the $566,900 median retirement balance held by Americans in their 60s.

For those maintaining a three-week schedule to match natural hair growth cycles, the opportunity cost grows even further, potentially reaching the value of a full retirement fund. In contrast, an eight-session laser hair removal course, including periodic maintenance, costs roughly $13,500 over the same four-decade period. According to Aleya Bamdad, founder of Laser by Aleya, the perception that laser treatments are prohibitively expensive ignores the recurring nature of waxing expenses. Even accounting for maintenance sessions, laser hair removal typically reaches a break-even point against waxing in under three years.
