Chartwells Targets Student Retention Through Dining Room Initiatives

Sixty-one percent of first-year students credit campus dining programs with easing their transition to university life, according to the 2026 Campus Dining Index. In response, foodservice provider Chartwells Higher Education has launched a "First 50 Days" initiative designed to transform dining halls into hubs for social integration and student belonging.

The initiative leverages daily touchpoints to foster community, as data indicates 40% of first-year students visit all-you-can-eat dining halls every day. By implementing structured social programming like the "First Year Eats" program—which features guided tours and "Mix and Mingle" events—the company aims to connect new students with peers, staff, and campus organizations. Upperclassmen ambassadors are also being deployed to guide newcomers through campus resources.

Chartwells is further integrating academic and emotional support through its "Milestones" program and the "Experience Syllabus." These frameworks align dining hall events with the college calendar, connecting students to health and wellness resources while hosting themed events like Spirit Days. CEO Eva Wojtalewski noted that the dining hall often serves as the primary gathering space outside the classroom, making the hospitality provided by staff a critical component in helping students feel at home during their initial weeks on campus.
