Legal Professionals Face Widespread Crisis in Mental Well-Being

Nearly 50% of attorneys report a decline in their overall well-being since the start of 2025, according to a Bloomberg Law survey of over 1,100 legal professionals. The data highlights a pervasive struggle with anxiety, disrupted sleep, and diminished focus directly linked to the mounting pressures of modern legal practice.

The report indicates that those reporting significant declines in health are suffering from compounded issues, including higher rates of depression and persistent mood disturbances. While firms often provide support resources, half of the surveyed attorneys refuse to utilize them. Among the minority who engage with professional or executive coaching, however, 75% report positive outcomes.

A clear gender divide persists within these findings. Although men and women carry similar burdens as caregivers, women attorneys are more likely to alter their career trajectories to accommodate domestic responsibilities, specifically regarding the care of aging parents. Cesca Antonelli, editor-in-chief at Bloomberg Industry Group, noted that these findings provide firms with necessary empirical evidence to determine if their current support structures actually address the needs of their workforce.
