The report, titled Blood Feathers, highlights conditions in South Africa, where 75% of the global ostrich product market originates. Investigators documented birds being pinned down for plucking without pain relief, a process that frequently results in bleeding—hence the industry term 'blood feathers.' Beyond the physical trauma of manual plucking, birds were observed suffering from injuries caused by aggression in crowded pens, including eye-pecking and open wounds.
While fashion brands often maintain that feathers are gathered through natural shedding, the volume of exports—150 tonnes of feathers shipped globally in the 2024-25 season—makes this claim impossible to sustain. The supply chain links these farms to major names including YSL, Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and the retailer Shein. Currently, 150,000 birds are slaughtered annually in South Africa for the combined meat, skin, and feather trade, with younger birds often killed at just 10 to 14 months old.
