The latest figures reveal that 14.5% of students seriously considered attempting suicide, with 12.5% formulating a specific plan and 6.4% reporting an actual attempt. Despite these figures, the two-year window from 2023 to 2025 marks a period of improvement across five of the six primary mental health metrics tracked by the study.
Looking back over the last decade, the landscape remains complex. Rates of persistent sadness have climbed since 2015, suggesting that recent gains have yet to fully offset long-term increases in youth distress. Demographic breakdowns highlight specific vulnerabilities: female students reported higher rates of risk across all measured categories compared to their male peers. Furthermore, ninth-grade students appear particularly susceptible, showing a higher likelihood of planning or attempting suicide than those in the final years of high school.
