The project focuses on replacing aging equipment with advanced conductors, specifically Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported and Aluminum Conductor Composite Core wires, to improve thermal performance and power throughput. Beyond hardware, the utility will integrate Distributed Acoustic Sensing via new fiber-optic ground wires, allowing for real-time monitoring and improved operational oversight of the regional grid.

A $71.5 million federal grant will bankroll the Montour Grid Resilience and Advanced Reconductoring Project, a sweeping infrastructure overhaul spanning 29.3 miles of transmission lines. The initiative aims to bolster capacity and reliability across Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna and Lehigh Valleys through high-tech grid modifications.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright and local lawmakers, including Senator Dave McCormick and Congressmen Dan Meuser and Ryan Mackenzie, framed the investment as a vital step in meeting rising electricity demand while stabilizing consumer costs. PPL Electric Utilities President Christine Martin noted that the federal support allows the company to maximize infrastructure efficiency without the need for new, disruptive corridors. The utility is now entering a negotiation phase with the Department of Energy to finalize the terms of the award, marking a shift toward modernized, high-capacity utility management in the region.
