Friends of Science Society Criticizes Canada’s Climate Modeling

A new report from the Calgary-based Friends of Science Society argues that Environment and Climate Change Canada’s latest climate assessment relies on obsolete, catastrophic scenarios. Retired energy economist Robert Lyman contends these models impose heavy regulatory burdens on businesses and consumers despite being officially retired by the scientific community.

The critique focuses on the updated "Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2026," which the organization claims mirrors the flaws of its 2019 predecessor. According to the Society, these models ignore current scientific standards, mirroring the data sets that previously fueled Canada's climate emergency declaration. The group suggests that mainstream media outlets have uncritically amplified claims of "irreversible" change without addressing the underlying modeling discrepancies.

Beyond the scientific debate, the Society highlights significant economic friction. Their analysis estimates that Canada’s restrictive net-zero policies have resulted in cumulative prosperity losses of approximately US$1.741 trillion between 2015 and 2025. These figures, cited in an open letter to Bank of Canada Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers, reflect the impact of canceled infrastructure projects and regulatory delays on major developments like Keystone and the Trans Mountain Expansion.

The organization also points to a growing tension between domestic climate policy and international trade. They argue that the adoption of mechanisms like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) risks further isolating Canada in a shifting global market. To address these concerns, the group plans to host meteorologist Anthony Watts in Calgary on November 16, 2026, for a discussion on reevaluating the current consensus on global warming.
