The seasonally adjusted annual rate for September is expected to reach 16.3 million, dipping from August's 16.8 million pace. While monthly comparisons remain difficult due to shifting holiday calendars and varying selling days, the quarterly volume of 4.12 million highlights a market that is holding steady. According to senior economist Charlie Chesbrough, the resilience is largely attributed to a buyer base that remains financially insulated from inflationary pressures.
Asian automakers are the primary beneficiaries of this stability, now capturing over half of the U.S. market for the second consecutive quarter. Conversely, the traditional Detroit 3 are bracing for their lowest market share on record. As consumers pivot toward hybrid vehicles and passenger cars—segments where Asian brands currently hold a competitive edge—this structural shift appears set to persist through the final quarter of the year.
