American Water Joins National Effort to Protect Drinking Water Sources
From September 27 through October 3, 2026, American Water is marking the American Water Works Association’s Source Water Protection Week. The initiative highlights the utility's ongoing efforts to safeguard water quality at the source, while encouraging the public to adopt practices that prevent pollutants from entering local streams and storm drains.
Beyond corporate infrastructure, the utility is promoting individual responsibility to curb urban runoff. Residents are encouraged to replace concrete surfaces with permeable mulch, utilize native landscaping to minimize chemical fertilizer needs, and properly dispose of household hazardous waste. The company notes that common practices—such as picking up pet waste and avoiding the flushing of pharmaceuticals—remain critical to preventing bacteria and chemicals from compromising the water supply.
