PitPro Automation deploys robotic tire changers to combat labor shortages

A San Francisco startup has installed a robotic system in a Calgary shop capable of replacing a full set of tires in 15 minutes. As tire technicians become increasingly scarce, PitPro Automation aims to automate the physically grueling process that local businesses struggle to staff in a competitive labor market.

The system utilizes two cube-shaped robots mounted on a track, employing sensors and precision arms to manage lug nuts and wheel swaps. PitPro founder Jeremy Conrad argues that the technology serves as a necessary intervention rather than a replacement for human workers. He notes that the labor is often viewed as backbreaking, leading to high turnover; in one instance, a nearby Panda Express lured away half a shop’s staff due to better working conditions.

PitPro is prioritizing partnerships with major chain stores, citing their standardized layouts as ideal for rapid deployment. The company is specifically targeting the Canadian market, where the biannual ritual of swapping winter and summer tires creates consistent, high-volume demand that shops currently struggle to meet.
