The initiative leverages partnerships with Hiring Our Heroes, Student Veterans of America, and the Home Builders Institute to provide direct pathways into fields including electrical work, pipefitting, and project management. Tim Chadwick, a 21-year Navy veteran who leads Google’s data-center operations in Ohio and Indiana, emphasized that these roles align with the problem-solving and teamwork skills veterans cultivate during service. While Google has not disclosed the specific financial commitment, the effort complements the company’s participation in the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, which aims to train one million workers by the end of the decade.
Google Targets Skilled Trades Gap With Veteran Recruitment Drive
With 1.4 million trade jobs projected to go unfilled by 2030, Google is launching an initiative to transition 25,000 veterans and military family members into high-demand roles. The program combines pre-apprenticeship training and career coaching to address a critical labor shortage fueled by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.

The demand for labor is intensifying as the construction of AI-driven data centers accelerates nationwide. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for electricians reached $63,190 as of May 2025, while project management specialists in the infrastructure sector earned a median of $102,320. For Cory Boatwright, president of Student Veterans of America, the program represents a shift in how the organization supports those leaving the military. By expanding the definition of a "student veteran" to include those pursuing professional certifications and trade training, the organization is prioritizing accessible routes to long-term career stability over traditional academic mandates.
