The current interest penalty reflects reforms passed in 2023, which halved the previous 1.5 percent monthly rate. While full payment is preferred, the Treasurer’s Office accepts partial payments to help taxpayers manage their liabilities. Those choosing to mail their payments must ensure their envelopes are postmarked by October 1 to avoid late fees.
Cook County Property Tax Deadline Set for October 1
Cook County property owners have until Thursday, October 1, to settle their Second Installment tax bills for the 2025 tax year. Treasurer Maria Pappas issued the reminder as the deadline approaches, noting that taxpayers who miss the cutoff will face monthly interest charges of 0.75 percent on any remaining balances.
Payments can be processed online at cookcountytreasurer.com, where users can also search for available property tax refunds or check eligibility for exemptions. For those preferring in-person transactions, nearly 400 Chase Bank branches across Illinois and over 100 community banks in the Chicagoland area are authorized to accept payments. Starting October 2, the Treasurer's Office will launch a free Payment Plan Calculator to assist property owners who are unable to meet the initial deadline, allowing them to structure their arrears into manageable monthly or semi-monthly installments.
