Detroit Student’s Art Hits National Billboards for Afterschool Month

Fifteen-year-old Evelyn Daniel, a tenth-grader at Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, has transformed her passion for design into a national campaign. Her artwork is now appearing on nearly 2,000 digital billboards across the United States as part of the 27th annual Lights On Afterschool celebration this October.

Daniel developed the "Powered by Afterschool" design while participating in programming at the Michigan Central Boys & Girls Club Spark Lab. Under the mentorship of industry professionals from Usher’s New Look, she gained hands-on experience in high-level production and project management. The collaboration with Clear Channel Outdoor serves to highlight the practical skills students acquire outside the traditional classroom. On October 22, the campaign will reach a peak when her work is displayed on jumbo billboards in New York City’s Times Square and projected onto Boston’s South Station.

The initiative arrives amid a significant gap in service access. Data from the America After 3PM report indicates that while parents of 29.6 million U.S. children seek afterschool programming, only 7 million are currently enrolled. The Afterschool Alliance, which organizes the event alongside partners like the National League of Cities, aims to use these displays to advocate for increased resources. With roughly 8,000 events planned nationwide, the campaign emphasizes that afterschool participation correlates with improved academic performance and long-term development in teamwork and problem-solving.
