Medical experts urge earlier diagnosis for Secondary Immunodeficiencies

As immunosuppressive therapies and hematological treatments become more common, Secondary Immunodeficiencies are emerging as a critical, yet frequently overlooked, clinical challenge. Experts gathered at the ESID 2026 conference in Maastricht are now calling for improved diagnostic standards to prevent the severe, recurring infections that often stem from delayed recognition.

While awareness of these conditions has grown, a significant gap persists between clinical practice and patient outcomes. Dr. Silvia Sánchez-Ramón of La Paz University Hospital noted that earlier recognition and better collaboration across medical specialties are essential to addressing the current diagnostic delays. Johan Prevot of IPOPI added that the issue is further complicated by cases where patients are misclassified, despite having underlying Primary Immunodeficiencies that require specific support.

Kedrion Biopharma is using the conference to highlight new data, including findings from the MAPPA survey. This initiative, developed with the Italian Association for Primary Immunodeficiencies, tracks patient journeys across Europe. Preliminary results from the survey’s expansion into Spain, Portugal, and Turkey remain stark: over half of respondents were diagnosed after age 18, and nearly 30% suffered permanent health damage by the time their condition was identified. Alessandro Segato, president of the association, emphasized that such real-world evidence is necessary to bridge the gap between patient experiences and systemic care improvements.
