The center unites three key research groups—the Chair of Automotive Technology, the Professorship of Cyber Physical Systems, and the Professorship of Autonomous Vehicle Systems. This collaboration builds upon the success of EDGAR, the university’s autonomous research vehicle that successfully navigated mixed traffic environments during IAA MOBILITY 2025 and conducted pilot operations in Berlin. The new facility will serve as a permanent base for doctoral training, software development, and the creation of industry-wide benchmarks.
TIER IV and TUM Launch Autoware Research Hub in Munich
TIER IV and the Technical University of Munich have launched the TUM Autoware Research Center, a multi-year partnership designed to scale open-source autonomous driving technology. By integrating academic research with industrial deployment, the initiative seeks to establish a standardized framework for safe, software-defined mobility across Europe.

Research efforts will concentrate on three core pillars: developing hybrid architectures that merge deep-learning models with rule-based safety guardians, establishing robust verification frameworks for system-level testing, and creating repeatable processes for deploying Autoware in diverse urban settings. By providing European manufacturers with shared validation tools and open-source software architectures, the partners intend to accelerate the transition of autonomous systems from experimental platforms to commercial and public-transport applications.
