Akhmetov Foundation Backs Traces Oscar Campaign

A US$200,000 grant from the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation will fuel the international campaign for Traces, Ukraine’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards. This marks the first time a Ukrainian charitable organization has directly financed a film’s push for an Oscar, aiming to amplify the testimonies of war survivors.

Directed by Alisa Kovalenko and co-directed by Marysia Nikitiuk, the documentary follows six Ukrainian women as they confront the trauma of sexual violence and torture. The film has already secured critical standing, claiming the Panorama Audience Award at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, along with honors at The Hague’s Movies That Matter and Millennium Docs Against Gravity.

The funding will support outreach to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, positioning the film’s narrative on a global cultural stage. This effort aligns with the Foundation’s Museum of Civilian Voices, an archive housing over 145,000 personal war testimonies. By bridging cinematic storytelling with its existing documentation of human rights abuses, the Foundation seeks to ensure these individual accounts of resilience remain central to the international conversation on the conflict.
