Rising Candy Prices Fail to Spook Halloween Shoppers

Americans are set to spend a record $4.1 billion on sweets this Halloween despite a sharp 8.1% hike in candy and gum prices. While inflation has pushed chocolate costs to painful new heights, the tradition of trick-or-treating remains a powerful driver for consumer spending across the country.

Chocolate has become the season’s primary casualty, with average package prices climbing 15.5% to $5.67. This surge stems largely from extreme weather conditions in Ghana and Ivory Coast, the world's leading cocoa producers. Although cocoa prices quadrupled between January 2023 and 2025 before eventually stabilizing, the relief arrived too late to prevent significant sticker shock for families filling their bowls.

For many, the cost is secondary to preserving a childhood ritual. Abby Mynatt, a 21-year-old student in Tennessee, noted that her desire to recreate the excitement of receiving Reese’s Cups outweighs the impact on her budget. This sentiment reflects a broader trend, as total Halloween spending is projected to reach $13.5 billion, proving that the holiday's cultural gravity remains stronger than current retail trends.
