Dragon Boat Festival Honors Poet Qu Yuan in Yichang

Drums echoed across the Yangtze River on Friday as Yichang, the ancestral hometown of the ancient poet Qu Yuan, launched a massive cultural festival. The event, blending traditional water races with ceremonial performances, marks the start of a multi-day commemoration dedicated to the poet’s enduring patriotic legacy in Hubei Province.

The festivities opened with the 'Ode to Qu Yuan,' a choreographed performance of dance and song designed to immerse spectators in the historical atmosphere of the region. Following the ceremonial dotting of the dragon eyes, the focus shifted to the water, where the Three Gorges University Students Dragon Boat Race and the Yichang Dragon Boat League launched their vessels. The competition saw teams slicing through the current in synchronized rhythm, fueled by the cadence of onboard drummers.

Beyond the competitive races, the city is hosting a series of cultural gatherings, including poetry recitals in Zigui. These events aim to bridge the gap between historical traditions and modern public engagement, ensuring that Qu Yuan’s influence remains a fixture of life along the Yangtze. Organizers stated that the festival serves to preserve these centuries-old customs while adapting them for current audiences through a mix of athletic competition and artistic reflection.
