Organized by Veronafiere and the Italian Trade Agency, the event bridged the gap between Italian producers and Canadian industry leaders. Led by VIA Faculty Sarah Heller MW and John Szabo MS, the curriculum challenged participants to navigate Italy's complex viticultural landscape, covering regional identities, native grape varieties, and advanced tasting methodologies. Candidates engaged with 43 distinct Italian wines before undergoing a rigorous examination process that included blind tasting, written theory, and multiple-choice testing.
Vinitaly International Academy Expands Footprint with Toronto Debut
The Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) solidified its presence in North America this week, certifying 35 new Italian Wine Ambassadors during its inaugural Canadian course. Held at Toronto’s ARIA Ristorante, the two-day intensive program drew 55 professionals, signaling a strategic push to deepen expertise within one of the world's most dynamic wine markets.
Veronafiere President Federico Bricolo emphasized that these new ambassadors serve as a vital link in promoting Italian culture abroad. The certification marks a significant milestone for the academy, which now oversees a global network of over 1,600 members across 57 countries. Following the successful Toronto launch, the organization is set to continue its international expansion with a follow-up certification course scheduled for October 25–26, 2026, in New York, coinciding with the Vinitaly.USA event.
