Washington D.C. Prepares for 34th Annual Giant BBQ Battle

Pennsylvania Avenue transforms into a culinary arena this weekend as the 34th annual Giant National Barbecue Battle brings together top pitmasters, D.C. go-go legends, and global flavors. Running June 27–28, the event serves as a centerpiece for the city’s DC250 anniversary celebrations and Giant Food’s 90th year.

The festival, recognized by Congress as the Official National BBQ Championship, has expanded beyond a simple cook-off into a massive cultural showcase. Competitors from across the country will vie for $50,000 in prizes and titles ranging from Best Brisket to Best Sauce. The Kingsford Great American Grilling Stage will host a rotation of culinary experts, including Justin Rowland and record-holding competitive eater Miki Sudo, who brings her expertise to the stage ahead of the weekend’s high-stakes eating challenges.

Beyond the smoke and grills, the event features a dense entertainment schedule with over 50 performances across six stages. Local icons such as Rare Essence and E.U. will anchor the go-go programming, while Tito Puente Jr. leads a diverse lineup on the World Music Stage. Attendees can explore 15 international cuisines within the sampling pavilion and engage with interactive sports exhibits from Washington’s professional teams, including the Wizards and Capitals. Admission is free for children under 12, with tickets and additional information available at bbqindc.com.
