Ford Enlists Apple Software to Power Next-Gen Electric Fleet

Ford is handing Apple a central role in its autonomous vehicle strategy, marking the first time a major automaker has integrated Apple’s proprietary software directly into its core operating systems. This move pivots away from the industry standard of using smartphone mirroring to control critical self-driving and navigation functions.

For years, automakers have treated tech giants like Apple and Google with intense suspicion, fearing that surrendering dashboard control would erode their customer relationships and revenue streams. Ford is breaking that precedent. By embedding Apple technology directly into the vehicle architecture, the company aims to bypass the need for an iPhone connection while streamlining development costs for its upcoming electric lineup.

CEO Jim Farley characterized the partnership as a pivotal moment for the $56 billion manufacturer. Starting next year, Ford will launch a new electric pickup truck—overseen by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke—with a targeted price point of $30,000. This strategy contrasts sharply with competitors like General Motors, which is actively stripping Apple CarPlay from its vehicles to maintain total control over proprietary software. Apple’s senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, confirmed that while Ford is the current exclusive partner, the company intends to extend this automotive software suite to other manufacturers in the future.
