The parasite, previously considered eradicated in the United States, has been migrating northward through Mexico and Central America since 2023. Recent diagnoses in domestic animals have prompted the organization to release financial aid on a rolling basis, with applications remaining open through October 31, 2026, or until the funds are exhausted.
Dr. Stephanie Janeczko, senior vice president of veterinary medicine at the ASPCA, emphasized that widespread use of parasiticides in high-density facilities like shelters acts as a primary barrier against a larger national outbreak. Participating organizations must be located within or adjacent to USDA-designated infested zones and maintain a formal relationship with a veterinarian to oversee treatment protocols.
