The expansion signals a shift for the decade-old firm, which previously centered its business model on self-directed retirement vehicles. Unlike the company’s signature Crypto IRAs, Freedom Accounts function as standard taxable accounts, providing users the freedom to move capital without triggering retirement-age withdrawal penalties or required minimum distributions. Co-Founder Chris Kline noted that the move is designed to address the broader financial needs of clients who want a unified experience for their entire digital portfolio.
BitcoinIRA Launches Taxable Accounts to Bypass Retirement Restrictions
Las Vegas-based BitcoinIRA is shedding its retirement-only focus with the introduction of Freedom Accounts, a new taxable investment vehicle. By bypassing the rigid contribution limits and distribution rules of traditional IRAs, the platform now allows users to manage both long-term retirement holdings and active, non-retirement digital assets from a single dashboard.

Central to the new offering is the ability to perform in-kind transfers. Users can move existing holdings directly from external exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Robinhood into the BitcoinIRA ecosystem without the tax friction of selling assets for cash. Once assets are moved, the platform enables 24/7 trading across more than 100 cryptocurrencies, alongside features such as automated rebalancing and staking rewards. Security remains anchored in the same institutional-grade infrastructure used for retirement funds, with assets custodied by Digital Trust and protected via BitGo multi-signature wallets.
