The demonstration utilized two utility-scale projects managed by esVolta—the 240 MW Anole and 100 MW Burksol sites—to move 9.2 GWh of renewable energy across daily charging and discharging windows. Unlike traditional annual accounting, which often fails to capture the real-time value of storage, this approach aligns with emerging requirements from the Science Based Targets initiative and the GHG Protocol. Quintrace provided the tracking software, ensuring dynamic loss calculations and adherence to EnergyTag standards to prevent double-counting.
The project introduces a novel revenue stream for battery operators by linking asset dispatch to corporate carbon-reduction goals rather than relying solely on energy price signals. By contracting for specific charging windows, Google secured the environmental attributes of the shifted energy without assuming the operational risks of tolling the assets. This structure grants operators the flexibility to continue responding to grid emergencies and market fluctuations while fulfilling corporate decarbonization mandates.
