The bank’s board has appointed deputy president Jonas Ahlström to serve as acting CEO, pending standard regulatory approval. Ahlström, a long-term veteran who joined the institution in 2005 and has served on the group executive committee since 2020, now faces the task of steering the firm while the board initiates a search for a permanent successor.
SEB CEO Johan Torgeby Steps Down After Decade at Helm
Johan Torgeby resigned as president and chief executive of Swedish banking giant SEB on October 6, 2026, citing personal and family reasons. His departure, which included an immediate exit from the bank's board, concludes a ten-year tenure at the Stockholm-based institution, leaving the firm under interim leadership.

Torgeby’s sudden exit leaves a temporary vacuum at the top of a major financial player. SEB, which counts the Wallenberg family’s Investor AB among its primary shareholders, maintains a significant footprint in private wealth management, family office services, and corporate investment banking across the Nordic region. Torgeby, who joined the group in 2009, rose through the ranks to lead the bank’s large corporates and financial institutions division before taking the top job. The board has yet to signal whether the hunt for a replacement will prioritize internal candidates or external recruitment.
